Myths

1. If I join a sorority, I'm paying for my friends.

Not true at all. Sisters don't get paid a salary to hang out with each other!

2. You're nice to me NOW, but as soon as I join you'll haze me.

Every NPC (National Panhellenic Council) sorority, including Alpha Gamma Delta, has taken an active stance against hazing. If you feel an organization is hazing you, including non Greek organizations, please don't hesitate to report it to the university IMMEDIATELY.

3. This is only something the rich girls can do.

Many of the students at the University of Montevallo are students because they earned scholarships, or because they applied for and received loans. Many of our Alpha Gamma Delta sisters have jobs to help support their education and activities.

4. But my GPA will go down if I go Greek.

Greek organizations require a certain GPA to remain active and in good standing for both their chapters and their individual members, and they also are known for being a great source for tutors and support. At Montevallo the women's Greek GPA is in fact higher than the women's independent GPA. Alpha Gams value scholarship, because that is the REAL reason you're at this university.

5. It'll take over my life.

Any club or organization that you participate in takes time. You probably learned that in high school from balancing your homework with a club, work, or an activity. In a sorority you'll receive a list of activities weeks before they are to occur so that you can plan ahead. Regardless of the chapter you choose you'll be spending time during the week with your sisters, but it's FUN. Your older sisters will always be glad to help you learn how to balance class, sorority, and your other activities. College is the last chance to learn time management before the real world...and sororities are a fun way to learn that essential skill.

6. I won't be able to hang out with my other friends.

You will! Join other clubs and organizations on campus, participate in other activities, find study buddies in your major, and have coffee dates with your other Greek friends. College is a change to explore yourself and your community. A sorority should HELP you become well rounded.
